Simultaneous ionospheric variability on Earth and Mars

چکیده
[1] Ionospheric physics deals with the basic structure and variability of plasma within the upper atmospheres of the Earth and planets. Comparative studies foster both exploration and synthesis within diverse settings. In this paper we examine observations of the ionospheric profiles on Mars obtained on 9–27 March 1999 by the radio science experiment onboard the Mars Global Surveyor satellite, and compare their day-to-day variability with same-day observations on Earth. Using photochemical-equilibrium arguments applicable to the peak electron density layer on Mars and the E-layer on Earth, we find basic agreement in scaling laws between the planets, and in the details of correlations with simultaneous solar flux variations during a period of pronounced solar activity. We ascribe the residual variabilities (larger on Mars than Earth) to both observational uncertainties and to nonsolar mechanisms in need of further study on both planets.

Mars ionospheric response to solar wind variability
[1] At planets with induced magnetospheres, the coupling between the ionosphere, the weak draped magnetosphere, and the solar wind is very direct in comparison to Earth. The weak induced magnetosphere itself is created by the prevailing Solar wind conditions and therefore in its shape and strength dynamically depending on it. In early 2010, Mars was located behind Earth in the Solar wind; thus,...

[1] Martian electron density profiles provided by the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Radio Science (RS) experiment over the 95–200 km altitude range indicate wthat the height of the electron peak and the longitudinal structure of the peak height are sensitive indicators of the physical state of the Mars lower and upper atmospheres. The present analysis is carried out on five sets of occultation pro...
متن کاملResponse of peak electron densities in the martian ionosphere to day-to-day changes in solar flux due to solar rotation
Photochemical Chapman theory predicts that the square of peak electron density, Nm, in the dayside ionosphere of Mars is proportional to the cosine of solar zenith angle. We use Mars Global Surveyor Radio Science profiles of electron density to demonstrate that this relationship is generally satisfied and that positive or negative residuals between observed and predicted values of Nm are caused...
متن کاملSolar Flare Effects Upon the Ionospheres of Earth and Mars
Of the many episodic variations associated with the active Sun, perhaps the solar flare is the most spectacular and enigmatic. Because flares emit photons that reach our atmosphere in about 8 minutes, with no intervening heliospheric or magneto spheric interactions, flare effects upon the geospace system have been a somewhat neglected component in Space Weather research. Once flare photons pass...
متن کاملStudy of Ionospheric Effects on Azimuth Imaging for Medium-earth-orbit Sar
The Medium-Earth-Orbit SAR (MEOSAR) is one of the most potential next-generation spaceborne SARs for its excellent performances. However, the MEOSAR may not be able to produce data useful for science applications due to ionospheric effects. So it is very necessary to study ionospheric effects for the development of MEOSAR. In this paper, we present ionospheric effects on azimuth imaging for MEO...
